Comporium Directory Cover Art Contest Open To Students

April 3, 2009

Comporium Vice President Greg Austin has announced that it will sponsor an art contest for all Transylvania County students in grades 1-12 with the "Best of Show" featured on the front cover of its next local telephone directory.

"We met with Dr. Scott Elliot and Lisa Anderson at the school district to ensure they were comfortable with our proposal," Austin said. "Likewise, Tammy Hopkins at the Transylvania Community Arts Council readily agreed to get the information out to the art community and to coordinate the event. She will go over the details with the art teachers at the public schools, the Brevard Academy and the home schooled students."

The contest is open to public, private and home schooled students between the grades of 1 through 12. Prizes will be given in elementary, middle and high school categories. Independent judges will select a first place, second place, third place and honorable mention in each of the three categories. Rules and application forms will be distributed to all art teachers in the county. They will also be available at the TC Arts Council offices at 349 South Caldwell St. and at Comporium's offices at 190 East Main Street and 50 East Appletree St., all in Brevard.

Comporium will present checks for $250 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place to each winning student. Each honorable mention will receive $50. Additionally, each prize will be matched with a payment being made to the student's school art program.

The judges will then select the "Best of Show" winning entry. An additional $100 will be given to both the student and the student's school art program. This entry will be the cover of the 2010 phone book.

"Comporium has held art contests several times in some of our other service areas and it has really been successful," Austin said. "We enjoy doing something that promotes our community and reflects the fact that we are your hometown telecommunications provider. The theme is ‘most beautiful or inspirational place' in Transylvania County which will draw attention to the attractive qualities that make this a great place to live."

Anyone who needs more information or has questions should contact the Transylvania Community Arts Council by calling 884-2787. The Arts Council will host a reception on June 8 when the winners will be announced. All entries will be on display at the gallery from June 8 through June 10, 2009.

"TC Arts is excited to bring positive exposure to the arts in our community by partnering with Comporium on this student art contest," said Hopkins, executive director. "We have a lot of talented youth in our county and look forward to seeing whose creativity graces the cover of our next phone book."
