Jean Elizabeth Stridde Parker

Jean Elizabeth Stridde Parker

Jean Elizabeth Stridde Parker died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2012 at age 87. She was a resident of College Walk Retirement Community in Brevard at the time of her death.

Born Aug. 25, 1924, in Neenah, Wis., she was the first child of Elbert William Stridde and Margaret McKenna Stridde. She grew up in Niagara, Wis. and attended Lawrence College in Appleton, Wis. Following her father’s retirement, she accompanied her parents in a move to McAllen, Texas, where she met James Alfred Parker, a lieutenant in the United States Army Air Forces.

They were married in December 1944. The young couple went to Atlanta following the war where they lived for the next 35 years. She was active in the Atlanta Cancer Society, one year as president, while her husband, Jim, practiced as an attorney.

In the 1980s she became a fulltime resident of Sapphire Valley in Sapphire and enjoyed her involvement with several local businesses as a part-time employee. In 2001 she moved to College Walk to be closer to her family.

She remained a quick witted and lively companion despite her increasing confinement at home due to failing health. She was known for her humor and sharp eye for detail and she lived by the motto “everyone is entitled to my opinion.”

Her husband, James Alfred Parker; a daughter, Jamie Elizabeth Parker and a sister, Mary Stridde Peterson, predeceased her.

She is survived by daughters Pamela P. Parkhurst and partner Tom Harris, of Amherst, Mass. and Cynthia P. Platt and husband, Alfred, of Brevard; grandchildren, Parker J. Platt and wife, Susan, Megan P. McLauchlin and husband, Christian, and Alfred F. Platt III (Woody) and wife, Shannon Whitworth, all of Brevard; two beloved great-grandchildren, Noah and Luke McLauchlin and her sister, Sharon S. Karazulas, of Atlanta, Ga.

The family would like to thank the many amazing women who so lovingly cared for Jean during the past year and in particular those caregivers who were currently assisting her: Estherlita Steins, Rebecca Freeman, April Daniel, Darlene Stokley, Lauryl McDuffie, Martine Dowd, Kandy Hipp, and Natasha McKinney.

A very special thank you goes to Hilary Thomas, who was with her (and Cindy) every step of the way, and to Summer Griffin, whom she loved like a daughter.

No formal service is planned at this time. Friends of the family will be welcomed to a gathering to remember Jean at the home of Cindy and Al Platt on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made in her memory to the Boys and Girls Club of Transylvania County, 11 Gallimore Road, Brevard, NC 28712.
