Sewing Thread Comes To Transylvania – Transylvania County N.C.

No longer will the county’s stitchers be forced to drive 30 minutes each direction to purchase a simple spool of thread. Charlotte’s Fibers, Brevard’s yarn shop, now stocks Gutermann threads.

According to Charlotte Gilmore, the shop’s owner, when she opened Charlotte’s eight years ago she almost never had a request for thread. All of that changed when Walmart stopped carrying sewing supplies. Nowadays, she says, there’s scarcely a week that someone doesn’t come into the shop looking for thread.

“I’m a little slow,” laughs Gilmore, “but it eventually dawned on me that there existed a need that my shop could fill.”

She said she decided to carry Gutermann products because of the brand’s reputation for good quality. She now stocks more than 250 colors of polyester sewing thread, as well as cotton quilting and heavy duty threads.

Needlepoint and embroidery fans also have much to celebrate. After having carried small quantities of canvases, kits, and threads for several years, Charlotte’s Fibers bought out the inventory of The Creative Needle, a well respected needlework shop in Laurel Park, whose owner retired. Now Charlotte’s back room is filled to bursting.

Gilmore said, “We’re still struggling to absorb all this new inventory. It’s taken a lot longer than I envisioned, but we’re usually able to find what our customers are looking for if they can give us a few minutes to look.”

In addition to hand painted needlepoint canvasses, needlepoint and cross stitch kits, and dozens of patterns, the shop stocks many of the most sought after brands of stitching fibers such as Paternayan, Silk & Ivory, Rainbow Gallery, Caron’s Watercolor, and DMC. Finishing services for Christmas ornaments and pillows are provided locally through the shop and it also has a reliable source for finishing specialty projects like belts.

Charlotte’s has entered into an agreement with The Brush & Palette, also in College Plaza, to provide free non-glare glass when stitchery projects purchased from Charlotte’s are framed by TB&P.

Charlotte’s Fibers now offers classes in needlepoint and cross stitch, in addition to knitting, crochet, spinning, weaving (rigid heddle), tatting, and bobbin lace making. Visit the shop at 275 North Broad Street in the College Plaza Shopping Center, or call (828) 862-6886.
