All Welcome To Community Christmas Dinner Dec. 25 – Brevard NC
Once again the spirit of Christmas grows as we move closer to Dec. 25 and the annual Community Christmas Dinner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church nears.
About 18 years ago the pastor at that time, Rev. Carl T. Del Giudice, announced that he did not want to eat Christmas dinner alone and a tradition was born. It has grown over the years with the help of volunteers from its membership, members of the Brevard Jewish Community and members of the other churches of Koinonia, an ecumenical group of Christian churches. Volunteers donate treasure, equipment and time. Filled with the spirit of Christmas, they decorate, set-up, roast, bake, slice, mash, serve, bus tables and cleanup.
The dinner will be served from noon until 4 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, which is located at 150 Brian Berg Lane across Asheville Highway from Blue Ridge Community College. There will be a sign at the street entrance.
What will be served? There will be a warm and friendly greeting at the door plus a non-caloric, extra large dose of fellowship from all. The meal will be a traditional Christmas dinner for most people. There will be turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, dressing, rolls, cranberry sauce, and a wonderful array of desserts, all homemade. Some of the best desserts in town seem to show up at events in churches.
Who comes to this dinner? Those who are alone at Christmas, those with financial problems and those who just want to share in the spirit of the day. All are welcome and there is no charge for the dinner.
If you would like to help, there is still a need for some volunteers. Shifts are one hour and the pay is a warm and joyous heart. To volunteer or have your questions answered, call Karla at 674-6804. Those who wish to help defray costs of materials used to prepare, serve, cleanup and decorate may write a check to the church with Annual Community Christmas Dinner on the memo line and send it to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 Brian Berg Lane, Brevard, NC, 28712. Any extra food will be given to the Bread of Life ministry.
