Howard W. Boyd

Howard W. Boyd, 78, of Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain, formerly of Brevard, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, April 7, 1935, he received a B.A. in botany from the College of Wooster (Ohio), and a Ph.D. in plant pathology, from Ohio State University.

After marrying Betty Gwynn in 1957, he served as a United States Navy pilot for five years. While pursuing his doctorate, he and his family lived in Brazil for two years.

In 1968, they became owners/directors of Gwynn Valley Camp in Brevard for 30 years. Additionally, he was an associate professor of biology at Brevard College.

Following retirement, they participated in mission service in Mexico and Guatemala through the Presbyterian Church. Other volunteer work included Transylvania Christian Ministries, Kids in Camp, Rise and Shine Freedom School, Brevard Housing Authority Board, and helped found WHIT-C, which became El Centro.

While at Highland Farms, he was chair of the Garden/Greenhouse Committee and was a member of Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church.

In all of his professional and volunteer endeavors, he was passionate about equality of opportunity and building community of racial justice and reconciliation.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Gwynn Boyd; daughters, Eve Boyd, of Philadelphia, Mary Boyd-Brown (Dave), of Columbus, Ohio, and Ginger Van Valkenburgh (Mark), of Winter Park, Fla .; five grandchildren; brother, Alan Boyd (Sue), and sisters, Judy Charpentier (Art), and Barbara Wagner.

A memorial service was held Sunday, March 23, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Highland Farms, 200 Tabernacle Road, Black Mountain.

In addition, there will be a memorial service at Gwynn Valley Camp in Brevard, Aug. 16, 2014.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Gwynn Valley Campership Fund, Rise and Shine Freedom School (290 Oakdale Street, Brevard, NC 28712), or Kids in Camp (contact Gwynn Valley Camp).
