Ammons Running For School Board – Brevard NC

Tom Ammons

Tom Ammons is one of six candidates seeking a seat November on the Transylvania County Board of Education.

Two open seats are on the ballot.

Ammons said he knows this position takes commitment, and an ability to effectively communicate and work as a member of a team to serve students, parents, and teachers.

"Our school system deserves the care and compassion of each board member," he said. "I will ensure our students continue the strong tradition of obtaining an outstanding education."

Ammons' main focus, he said, as a school board member would be the health and safety of each student, teacher and administrator in the school system. He wants to ensure the children not only get the education they need, but the nutritional benefits they deserve throughout the school year.

Ammons also wants to promote the retention of all qualified teachers throughout the county and recruit local graduates so they can serve their community and have the opportunity to give back to the students what they received from "our dedicated teachers."

He said he will encourage parent involvement from the beginning, so teachers and parents will successfully communicate their child's strengths and weaknesses so each child has the ability to obtain their goals.

"Taking a proactive stance toward these issues will ensure our children get the best education from the best teachers," he said.

Ammons is a 1993 graduate of Western Carolina University, with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice.

He also completed the ROTC Program and served in the United States Army for 13 years in the North Carolina and South Carolina National Guard.

Ammons completed his military career as a battery commander in an Air Defense Artillery unit and had previously served as the military intelligence officer in an Air Defense Artillery Battalion.

Ammons has been married 20 years to his wife, Jessica, who is a second grade teacher at Rosman Elementary.

The couple will have lived in Transylvania County 10 years this August. Their children attend school in Rosman, with their oldest child at Rosman High School and their youngest at Rosman Elementary School.

Ammons is an active member of his church and has coached church basketball for the past five years. He coached his first year of U-10 soccer with the Transylvania Youth Soccer Association in 2013.

Ammons, according to a press release, has successfully served the citizens of Transylvania County for the past 10 years. He has been a dedicated law enforcement officer for more than 19 years, the release said.

He first served as a deputy sheriff in Buncombe County and for more than 11 years has been an agent and a supervisor with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

He has a "vested interest in our children, in our community and in our schools," the release said.

"His ability to successfully communicate with all people and finding resources to better serve our schools will benefit all students, parents and teachers in our school system," the release said. "Tom Ammons is a proven leader and served our country honorably. By electing Tom Ammons to the Transylvania County Board of Education, you will give him the opportunity to make a difference in each child and their families throughout our community."
