United Way Partners With Belk To Help Students – Brevard NC

Ritchie Harbison, store manager at Brevard Belk, and Katie Spotts, Resource Development Director for United Way of Transylvania County, strategically place in-store signs promoting the upcoming "trade in, trade up denim event" at Brevard Belk. The event puts the focus on jeans for local students.

Friday, Aug. 1, through Sunday, Aug. 3, customers who take one (or more) pairs of gently used jeans to Brevard Belk will receive a $5-off coupon (one per customer/total donation) good toward junior denim purchases. (Contact the store for further details.)

United Way of Transylvania County (UWTC) volunteers will pick up the donated jeans for distribution to local students through Sharing House. Sharing House will distribute the jeans according to the usual policies of their Clothing Room.

"UWTC is proud to collaborate with Belk and Sharing House to help students in Transylvania County get ready for school. Having appropriate clothing to wear is important, and lets the students focus on their educational success," said UWTC board member Patricia Fair.

"The 'trade in, trade up denim event' is the kick-off of Belk's annual United Way giving campaign. We hope to engage the entire community in this effort to work together to give back," said Ritchie Harbison, store manager of Brevard Belk.

"While the 'trade in, trade up denim event' coupons are only good on junior denim, we will gladly accept gently used denim in any student sizes...for young adults, boys or girls," said Harbison.

"Sharing House is extremely pleased to be a part of the United Way jeans distribution. These jeans will be a nice addition to our Clothing Room stock as families get ready for back to school," said Megan Kimsey, Volunteer and Special Project Manager at Sharing House.

UWTC has three goals for achieving positive community outcomes: increasing residents' financial stability, raising the county's high school graduation rate, and improving health care access and healthy behaviors.

At the present time, UWTC funds programs that strengthen families by helping prevent teen pregnancy, homelessness and neglect; and by providing housing, adult day care, family counseling, after-school programs, health care access, free transportation, youth athletic programs, financial counseling and youth conflict resolution training.
