Transylvania Times Wins Six Awards - Brevard NC

The National Newspaper Association (NNA) has announced that The Transylvania Times has won six awards for work done in 2013.

The advertising division won two awards for advertising, one for a special section and three for news.

In advertising, the Times took second place for Best Use of Ad Color for the entry entitled “Pumpkin Carving Contest Ad,” which was designed by Leigh Trapp. Of Trapp’s ad, judges wrote, “ Great use of color – art choice very powerful – well designed ad.”

Trapp also received an honorable mention for Best Multiple Advertiser Section with the Valentines Promotion Collaborative Ad.

In the Best Special News, Sports or Feature Section or Edition category, the Times received an honorable mention for Autumn, the paper’s special publication focusing on the activities that make that season special in the county. Primary contributors to that publication were Leigh Trapp, Derek McKissock, Skip Hirsh and Randy Rowe.

In the news division, the Times won two awards for Best Editorial. John Lanier took second place for the editorial “Keep Public Notices in Newspapers.” The judges’ wrote, “A great editorial about an issue all newspapers are facing now. What makes this editorial great is the local spin on the issue. It shows how people are affected if public notices are not in newspapers.”

He also received an honorable mention for the editorial “The Education Disconnect.”

Jeremiah Reed received an honorable mention in the Best Breaking News Photo for his photo entitled “Electrical Fire Guts Rental Home.” Awards will be presented in October at the annual meeting of the NNA in San Antonio, Texas.

Established in 1885, the NNA is a not-for-profit trade association representing the owners, publishers and editors of America’s community newspapers. Today, the organization’s 2,200 members make it the largest national newspaper association.
