Pisgah Group Of Sierra Club

The guest speaker at the Pisgah Group Sierra Club’s Thursday, Aug. 28, meeting is Patrick Hunter, an associate attorney in the Southern Environmental Law Center’s Asheville office. Hunter will provide an overview of SELC’s regional work with a focus on Western North Carolina.

In particular, Hunter will discuss SELC’s efforts to have coal ash contamination cleaned up throughout the state as well as the potential impacts of recent coal ash legislation passed by the General Assembly.

A native of New Bern, N.C., Hunter has lived in Asheville since 2011. In his free time he enjoys fly fishing, cycling and the occasional rock climb.

The coal ash issue is of particular interest to the local area as the Lake Julian ash impoundment looming above I-26 near the airport is one of the four North Carolina sites of highest concern for both safety and groundwater contamination.

The meeting will be held as usual at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation on South Broad St. and Varsity, across from the Cardinal Drive-in, at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28. For additional information, call Pisgah Group chair Jim Reynolds at 884-8377.
