Treat Israel Better

Although our troubled economy was the primary worry of voters in the recent mid-term elections, President Obama’s foreign policy was also a serious concern. His treatment of Israel, America’s only reliable ally in the Middle East, can be instructive in that regard.

A recent column by Bret Stephens in the Wall Street Journal points out that the Obama administration seems to make more effort “pursuing personal vendettas against allies like Israel than it does in waging effective military campaigns against enemies like ISIS”.

Since 2009, when Benjamin Netanyahu became Israel’s Prime Minister, he has demonstrated his peaceful intentions, often over the objections of his own political base, but consistent with the wishes of the Obama administration, by agreeing to:

1) recognize a Palestinian state,

2) enforce a 10 month settlement freeze,

3) release scores of Palestinian prisoners,

4) make a sincere effort to reach a final peace agreement with the Palestinians,

5) refrain from taking military steps against Iran,

6) honor every ceasefire during the war with Hamas this past summer.

In response to these concessions on the part of Israel, Secretary of State John Kerry has publicly blamed Israel for the failure of the peace effort, and the Israeli/Palestinian conflict for the rise of ISIS. It’s clear that President Obama, along with Vice-President Biden and Kerry, either has no appreciation for, or don’t care about what it’s like to live in a small country like Israel, which is surrounded by neighboring nations that are openly committed to its annihilation.

As Stephens has written, “The real problem for the administration is that the Israelis, along with other disappointed allies, are learning how little it pays to be on Barak Obama’s good side. His administration needs to learn that it had better act like a friend if it wants to keep a friend. It isn’t as if we have that many friends left.”
