Ask Us: Football Coach Salary

What is the salary and benefits package for the new Brevard High School football coach, Craig Pritchett?

Jeremy Gibbs, the school system’s human resources director, provided the following response:

“Mr. Pritchett’s monthly salary has not yet been determined. He, like every other teacher, must apply for a North Carolina educator license in which the N.C. Department of Public Instruction will verify his credentials (degrees and certifications), as well as his creditable years of service.

“Once that has been established by the state, he will be paid on the state teacher salary schedule at the appropriate education and experience level. This is just as any other teacher would be treated. Master’s degree teacher base salaries in North Carolina range from $3,630/month (with no experience) to $5,500/month (with 25+ years of experience).

“Tentatively calculating his monthly salary by estimating his years of service and based on the North Carolina state teacher salary schedule for a master’s degree level teacher, I expect he will be paid $4,015 per month.

“However, this has not yet been verified by the state and is only my estimate based on his education and years of experience.

“In addition, he will receive our standard local teacher salary supplement of 8.5 percent of his base salary each year, which all teachers in Transylvania County Schools (TCS) receive.

“The TCS athletic coaching supplement for a high school head football coach ranges from an annual amount of $3,000 to $8,000 based on years of relevant athletics experience. I have not been able to evaluate that relevant experience for the athletic supplement yet, but it would clearly not exceed $8,000 per year.”

Actual numbers, Gibbs said, won’t be available until after Pritchett actually starts with the school system.
