Division I athletes are fairly rare in Transylvania County, but one of Brevard High School's own joined their ranks last week.

Ian Pierron, a senior on the Blue Devil soccer squad, signed to play for Gardner-Webb next year.

Pierron credits his Highland Football Club (HFC) coaches for helping him achieve the next level.

"My HFC coaches told me to contact their coaches," Pierron said.

So the Blue Devil striker sent the Bulldogs a highlight reel and the coaching staff there contacted him.

A visit to Boiling Springs sealed the deal.

"I went down there and it felt like a good fit," Pierron said, adding that he liked all three coaches on that visit.

Since there is no junior varsity program at Gardner-Webb, Pierron was told he needed to be ready to play any position on the field.

For the Blue Devils, Pierron scored 15 goals.

Current Blue Devil head coach Gordon Murray, who has coached Pierron for years, said the senior will be a good fit for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

"Nobody is more coachable with more drive," Murray said. "He's got a lot of talent - soccer I.Q., I call it."

Pierron said he plans to major in business once he gets to Gardner-Webb.

The Runnin' Bulldogs compete in the Big South Conference with the likes of UNC-Asheville, High Point University and Charleston Southern.

G-W was 3-13-1 last season, but seven of their losses were by just one goal. Three losses were by two goals.
