NOTICE OF

DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED SEWAGE

The City of Brevard experienced a discharge of untreated sewage from the sewer pump station located on Neely Road. A 14” force main pipe ruptured on Old Highway 64 between Osborne Road and Azalea Avenue. Repairs by Collections System personnel included cutting, removing and replacing a 2’ section of 14” ductile iron pipe. The discharge event occurred as pumps were shut down at approximately 3:06 PM on Friday, August 21, 2015 and ended at 3:55 PM on Friday, August 21, 2015 when the force main repair was completed. The total amount of the discharge was 18,620 gallons. The spill response team mobilized and captured 10,000 gallons of sewage from the Neely Road discharge site which was disposed of at the Waste Treatment Facility.

Similar ruptures along this force main line have occurred due to age and deterioration. Funding is included for the Neely Road Pump Station Up-grade Project, Neely Road Force Main Replacement, and Flow Equalization Tank in a recently awarded grant funded project from the NCDENR Division of Water Quality State Revolving Fund; and 13,000’ of this 14” force main line will be replaced by 2017.

The City of Brevard reminds all customers any discharge of storm water, surface water, ground water, roof runoff, and subsurface drainage connected to the city sewer system is a violation of the City Code of Ordinances. Customers uncertain of the soundness of their connection to the sewer system may call the City of Brevard Public Services, (828) 884-2171, to confirm if they have a broken cleanout or improperly attached roof drain or sump pump. This notice was required by North Carolina General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.C.

This the 25th day of August, 2015.
