The Co-ed Cinema in downtown Brevard has recently changed ownership to the hands of Abby Steel, a 19-year-old California native.

Steel has worked at the theatre for about two years and has been the manager for just one year. She said that she had been in discussions with the previous business owner, Mark Peddy, about taking over the theatre, and she has been shown the ropes since she agreed to purchase it.

During his ownership, Peddy invested $80,000 in digital equipment and a total investment of $250,000 to make improvements since he took over in 2009.

The City of Brevard owns the building that the Co-Ed is located in, which it purchased in 1980.

Steel leases the building, which was built in 1902, from the city, with an agreement that she will maintain a place to show movies for the local community.

Steel said that she loves the theatre and describes it as "good clean fun."

"I'm going to keep it the same," she said. "It's tried and true, and we're going to show mostly the same type of movies. We might do a few things different. We might do something fun for Star Wars in December."

Steel is originally from Santa Barbara, Calif., and moved here with her family seven years ago when her parents retired and sold their business.

"I moved here site unseen," she said.

When not at the theatre, Steel can be found in Pisgah National Forest on her mountain bike, riding horses in DuPont State Recreational Forest, or Hiking near the Blue Ridge Parkway.
