Community Transportation Grant Team Sought – Transylvania County NC

Barbara Marr, TRAIN Coordinator

In a Community Transportation informational meeting Friday, Sept. 18, Keith McCoy, Transylvania County transportation director, briefed attendees regarding current funding and potential additional funding opportunities.

According to McCoy, although current county transportation services have extended to include a Sapphire Community Cen-ter/Lake Toxaway route with a lift-equipped van, there is still demand for transportation to out-of-county medical appointments.

Vicki Eastland, Land of Sky RPO coordinator, unveiled the May 2015 Transportation Survey results reflecting the top priority as ride vouchers for disabled and senior Transylvania County residents. During the meeting, community transportation was identified as a key factor to strengthening economic development within Transylvania County.

Access to reliable transportation for medical, work, and personal needs - all with the goal of empowering residents to improve their lives -was identified as another crucial local need.

TRAIN (Transylvania Resource Access Information Network) seeks committed volunteers to participate as Transportation Grant team members. The team will work to identify needs, define geographic areas and prioritize need type (medical, employment, and/or general transportation). Transportation Grant team members will also assess marketing approaches to inform the community of current transportation options. Ultimately, the team will work with state and local transportation representatives to identify solutions to local needs.

Individuals interested in serving on the Transportation Grant team should contact Barbara Marr, TRAIN coordinator, at the United Way of Transylvania County office (828) 883-8822 or
