Hansens To Lead Annual Parade - Brevard NC

Tim and Peggy Hansen

The 44th Annual Downtown Brevard Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, Dec. 5.

It will follow its usual route, leaving Brevard High School at 3 p.m. and then continue down Broad Street, ending at Brevard College.

The theme for this year's parade is "A Storybook Christmas."

Whether it's "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," "The Gift of the Magi" or "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer," each person has memories of Christmas stories read by a warm fire while visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. The hope is that this year's theme will evoke those memories and remind us to pass on those traditions.

In line with the "Storybook" theme, the Grand Marshals have been chosen for helping to bring the importance of reading to the forefront in our community.

This year, Tim and Peggy Hansen will lead the parade.

Since 1976 the Hansens have owned and operated Highland Books in Brevard.

Family-owned book stores are as rare as a first edition William Faulkner. This honor is particularly fitting as the Hansens have recently decided to retire and put the store up for sale after 40 years.

In addition to the Grand Marshal, the Chamber of Commerce chooses a Parade Marshal each year. The Parade Marshal is a group that has been a positive influence in the community through its acts or achievements. This year's Parade Marshal is the Friends of the Library.

Proceeds from their used book sale, from the book room on the second floor and from dues go to underwrite events and programs as well as to enhance the library's offerings and services.

If your business or organization is interested in participating in the parade, pick up an application at the Chamber of Commerce at 175 E. Main St. in Brevard, or call 883-3700 or email prentiss@brevardnc

In order to participate in the parade, advance registration and a $10 fee per organization are required. Note that all floats will be asked to enter from the Greenville Highway side of Gallimore Road to avoid congestion on Country Club Road. Unfinished floats will need to go to Medical Associates' parking lot on Gallimore Road to be completed before entering the High School parking lot. The deadline for registering for the parade is Nov. 20, 2015.

The Brevard/Transylvania Chamber of Commerce coordinates this annual parade as a community service.

The chamber is a member-based organization designed to enhance, advance, and promote the well-being of the local business community.

It is a 501 (c)(6) nonprofit with more than 490 members.

Membership is open to any person, firm, or corporation interested in the promotion and welfare of the local business community and the quality of life for Brevard and Transylvania County residents. For more information, visit or stop by 175 E. Main St. in Brevard.
