The Transylvania Times -

I Apologize

A few weeks back I wrote a letter to this paper in response to a bumper sticker I had seen, which had a picture of Hilary on it and said “Life’s a _____—so don’t vote for her.” The sticker ticked me off and in my letter I called the driver an “irate ignoramus.” I was pleased to see my salvo accepted by The Transylvania Times. But when I read it in the midst of all the other angry letters there, I realized that all I had accomplished, really, was to add to the insulting going on. Depressing.

We need to stop doing this. I think the guy with the bumper sticker is dead wrong. I’m sure the feeling is mutual. But we Americans have got to start listening to each other — if we can remember how. I think all the hateful, despicable, personal insulting (including mine), has the potential of ruining our country.

So I would like to apologize for insulting the truck driver displaying that bumper sticker. I’m sorry. I take it back! Let’s get together somewhere over a beer (or coffee if you’re a tee-totaler). I’ll buy. Call me at 862-3502 and prove you’re the one by telling me what truck you were driving. We’ll sit and I promise to listen to why you display that bumper sticker. I will assume that I will discover you have deeply held values that I can respect, and I hope you will do the same. We are fellow citizens of America. We are neighbors. We don’t have to agree, we don’t even have to like each other, but we have to not hate and insult each other. I’d like to see if we can do this.
