Police Identify Body Of Man – Brevard NC

Matthew Kyle Jenkins

Police have identified the body found on the Brevard College campus last week as 24-year-old Matthew Kyle Jenkins, who had been missing since February.

According to Brevard Police Chief Phil Harris, an autopsy performed on Monday, March 21, confirmed the identity as that of Jenkins, who police identified as a missing person on Feb. 16.

Jenkins' body was discovered in a wooded area behind the maintenance building by two Brevard College students on Friday, March 18.

Harris said the autopsy revealed Jenkins had a mixture of drugs in his system, but that more tests were being necessary to determine the cause of death.

"It was an ongoing struggle for him," he said.

Harris said Jenkins had moved to Brevard from Knoxville, Tenn., and was taking part in a recovery program when he went missing only eight days after moving to the area.

The autopsy also confirmed there were no signs of trauma and no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

The body was so badly decomposed when police arrived it made it difficult for investigators to identify the man.
