The hits kept on coming Saturday afternoon for the Brevard Lady Blue Devils and the result was a resounding 11-3 win in the second round of the 2A state playoffs.

Brevard (nine seed) hosted East Burke (25 seed) who upset Lake Norman 2-1 in the opening round.

The Blue Devils, however, left no room in the discussion for a repeat performance from the underdog Cavaliers.

Brevard pounded out 13 hits on the day, for a combined 10 RBIs, and held a comfortable lead for most of the game.

The Blue Devils got the scoring started in the bottom of the second. Brooke Nanney recorded a double, for one of her four hits on the day, before Abby Williams crushed a line drive to center field, making the score 1-0.

Another double from Lauren DuBreuil scored pinch-runner Bella Patterson. Brevard tacked on another run to take a 3-0 lead going into the third.

East Burke responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but Brevard answered right back in the bottom of the frame.

A double from Makayla McNeill scored Casey Gilbert before McNeill scored on another double from Nanney.

Brevard tacked on two more runs, including DuBreuil, who scored on a wild pitch from third base.

As the game progressed, the Cavaliers stayed aggressive at the plate, but the Lady Blue Devils' defense was stout and senior ace Gilbert got stronger as the innings wore on.

With the score 8-2, East Burke managed one run in the top of the sixth. But Brevard answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.

Nanney was perfect at the plate on the day, going 4-4 with two RBIs. DuBreuil was 2-3 and also drove in two runs.

Production seemed to come from every spot in the order, as eight different Lady Blue Devils recorded an RBI on the day.

The Brevard Lady Blue Devils' bats were on fire Saturday as the team exploded for 11 runs against East Burke. "Our bats coming alive today was big for us," head coach David McNeill said. "We had some scouting reports on their pitching and our girls came ready to hit and were aggressive at the plate."

McNeill also praised Gilbert, who tossed the complete game winner, giving up just one earned run on five hits.

"You give me five or six runs and I'll take 'Red' every time," he said.

With the victory, Brevard advances to the third round of the state playoffs for the first time since 2013.

To move on to the fourth round the Lady Blue Devils will have to slay the giant in top-seeded West Stanly.

McNeill said it would be a tall task against the Colts, but that his team would be ready.

"We'll come together Monday and by then I'll have some information about their team and we'll work to get prepared for them. We ended practice (Friday) by me telling them, 'We're ready. Let's go.' I'm going to tell them the same thing on Monday," McNeill said.

Tuesday's game is at West Stanly starting at 7 p.m.
