Rufus Wisdom Woodring

Rufus Wisdom Woodring, 89, of Lake Toxaway, passed away Friday, May 27, 2016, at his residence.

Born May 28, 1926, in Transylvania County, he was the son of the late William Walter Woodring and Martha Birdeen Patterson Woodring.

He was raised in North Carolina, lived in Castle Rock, Wash. for 23 years and then returned to North Carolina in 1991.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion.

He worked in the logging industry as a timber faller and was a country music and NASCAR fan. He loved giving to his neighbors, friends and strangers alike, and loved everyone unconditionally. He especially loved his grandchildren, who fondly recall "Papa's" big bear hugs!

He was of the Full Gospel Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Towe; brothers, Eugene Woodring, Carol Woodring, William Woodring Jr. and Elroy Woodring; son, Joe Banther, and a special brother-in-law, Joe Towe.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ruth Banther Woodring; son, Rondal Woodring and wife, Donna, of Estacada, Ore .; daughters, Dixie Clontz and husband, Ray, of Castle Rock, Wash. and Deborah Brewer, of Tacoma, Wash., Michael Banther, of Hickory, N.C., Russell Banther and Kelly Banther, of Lake Toxaway and Freda Banther Dias and husband, Andre, of Cary, N.C .; grandchildren, Britt, Jennifer, Robin, Tammy, Christie, Bonnie, Josh, Farrah, Caleb, Joshua and Sara; 18 great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016, at the family's home at 3311 Diamond Creek Road, in Lake Toxaway. Virgil Hogsed will officiate.
