Tornados Unveil VB Schedule – Brevard NC

Brevard College head volleyball coach Anna Wagner has released her team’s schedule for the upcoming 2016 season that includes a neutral-site date with defending national champion Wheeling Jesuit and seven matches against other NCAA Tournament participants from a season ago.

The Tornados will play 29 regular-season matches, 22 of which come against South Atlantic Conference foes, and welcome opponents to Boshamer Gymnasium on 12 occasions.

The Tornados will host each conference opponent once in addition to a nonconference bout with North Greenville in October.

The season’s headliner, however, is a neutral-site matchup with Wheeling Jesuit, which finished the 2015 season 39-4 and dropped just one set in six NCAA Tournament matches en route to the program’s first national championship a season ago.

The Tornados and Cardinals square off on Oct. 1 at Wingate following the Tornados’ matchup with the Bulldogs, giving Brevard two matches in a single day against teams coming off an NCAA Tournament bid.

“[Wingate head coach] Shelton [Colleir] asked me if I’d be interested in doing a tri-match and I jumped at the chance because of what a great opportunity it is for our program,” Wagner said. “We’re preparing all season for our goal of making the conference tournament, and facing an opponent of this caliber will only help us increase our level of play. This will be a fun and exciting environment for everyone.”

Brevard will play defending Peach Belt Conference Tournament champion Flagler on the Saints’ home floor during the season-opening Flagler Invitational.

The Tornados will also square off twice with Wingate, Carson-Newman, and Lenoir-Rhyne in league play, all of which earned a bid to the Southeast Regional a season ago.

Two matches against Southern Indiana and one against Valdosta State are also on tap for the Flagler Invitational in St. Augustine on the season’s first weekend.

The home opener comes on Sept. 8 as the Tornados host a rare Thursday night match in the SAC opener against Queens.

Catawba makes its trip to Boshamer Gymnasium the following evening, beginning a seasonlong trend of alternating weekends of home and away conference matches for the Tornados.

In addition to facing each conference opponent twice in the league’s double round robin format, Brevard plays a home-and-away series with North Greenville.

The 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championship begins on Friday, Nov. 18, at Wingate’s Cuddy Arena with four quarterfinal matches.

The three-day event concludes on Sunday, Nov. 20.
