Lake Toxaway Man Gets 20 Years For Rape Of 7-Year-Old - Brevard NC

Paulino Salas

A Lake Toxaway man was sentenced to at least 20 years in prison after admitting to raping his then 7-year-old stepdaughter in 2013 and 2014.

Paulino E. Salas, 30, was sentenced to a minimum of 240 months and a maximum of 348 months by Superior Court Judge Mark E. Powell on Monday.

Salas pleaded guilty to four counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor and five counts of first-degree statutory rape.

District Attorney Greg Newman, who is the chief prosecutor for Transylvania County, said in court that Salas raped the girl while in their bed in their Lake Toxaway home while a small infant was in the same room.

The child slept in the bed with her mother and Salas.

The girl later told her grandmother what had happened.

Newman said Salas admitted the incidents to his pastor and other church officials, after being confronted.

Salas was scheduled to stand trial but decided to enter a plea agreement the morning trial was scheduled. He was led into the courtroom donning the black and white stripes, with hands and feet shackled, accepted the plea agreement, through an interpreter, and led back out, where he was processed and taken to prison.
