Authorities Remind Public About Neely Road Closure-Brevard NC

Authorities are reminding the public that Neely Road in Brevard is closed for a construction project anticipated to take until November to complete.

The city project aims to improve the sewer system infrastructure in the Neely Road area. Local traffic is allowed in the area. Local traffic consists of residents who live on Neely Road between barricades at French Broad Street and Old Hendersonville Highway.

Police Phil Harris said the barricades have been in place for several weeks, but drivers have ignored the barricades.

Drivers have even moved the barricades to drive past the closure. This has created hazards at the work site.

"Driving past the barricades to continue through the construction zone is a traffic violation," he said. "This has created an unsafe situation for both the construction crew and the citizens driving through the construction zone."

One example cited by the project foreman was a vehicle driving past the large backhoe as the bucket was suspended over that section of the roadway.

"The driver could have been seriously injured or worse if the bucket had moved even slightly," Harris said.

Harris has requested solid closures at other locations along the route to prevent this from continuing. He has also asked officers to begin enforcing the violation by issuing both warnings and citations.

Many use Neely Road as a route to go between the Greenville Highway and the Asheville Highway.

Alternative routes must be used until the completion of this construction project, Harris said.

"When this project is complete, our waste water infrastructure will be more efficient and allow better service to our entire community," said Public Works Director David Lutz. "We ask that our community support us by using detours until the project is complete. The more cooperation we have from our drivers, the sooner the project will be complete."

Future phases of this project will include Old Hendersonville Highway between Neely Road and Wilson Road, and the section of Wilson Road between Old Hendersonville Highway and the city's Waste Water Treatment Plant. Both future phases will have similar closures as Neely Road.
