Comments Were Insulting

November 28, 2016

I am dismayed and offended that Larry Chapman, a retired Marine Corps colonel, would use Veterans Day as a cover for his much slanted political rant. My service in the armed forces consisted of three years in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean “business.” My father served honorably in the U.S. Army in World War I; my daughter served our great country in assignments across the globe as a Navy officer for 30 years.

I am proud to be a family of veterans. I am also insulted that Chapman uses, at best, distortions and, at worst, falsehoods to attack a woman who served this nation honorably. Chapman and I, obviously, voted for different presidential candidates, but I am grateful for his and every veteran’s service. That is the greatness of our nation.

We have no need to insult the “other” and certainly need not call into question the intelligence and patriotism of us veterans who preferred to vote for a distinguished female candidate. I selected and served in the Coast Guard 60 years ago and I continue to feel honored to have had that opportunity to serve.

I resent Colonel Chapman’s indirect insult, cloaked as homage, to those veterans who saw November’s options differently.
