Are you downsizing to a smaller home and have shelves of used books that need to go?

Why not put them in one of the yellow boxes found in convenient locations around town? Your donation will help local women take the next big step in their education.

The call for books for Brevard's annual sale has begun.

For the 48th year, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is asking for donations of used books.

AAUW's yellow boxes are available at local stores, churches, schools and residential areas throughout Brevard and surrounding communities.

If you have a large donations of books, volunteers will do a pickup at your home.

The sale raises money to fund educational scholarships for women from Transylvania County to attend Brevard College and Blue Ridge Community College.

The funds also help local elementary and middle school girls attend science and technology camps at Green River Preserve, plus the WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Program at Clemson University.

After the books leave your shelves, AAUW member volunteers transport them to a warehouse for sorting, pricing, and packing for the big sale in June. Members of AAUW's Brevard branch volunteer hundreds of hours preparing for the annual sale.

"It's absolutely astounding how 1,000 boxes of books in our storage unit are moved to the gym at Brevard College and totally set up with all the books on tables in their appropriate subject areas in just one-and-a-half days," said Kathy Piersol, who co-chairs the yellow box part of the sale, along with Judy Thomas.

The book sale is the main fundraising activity of AAUW's Brevard branch and has received recognition at AAUW's state level for the sale's spectacular success over nearly five decades.

The yellow boxes are the primary means for collecting donated books.

During the end of January and first week of February, the AAUW volunteers delivered the yellow boxes to the locations listed below.

If any other organizations or businesses would like to be included as a book collection site, call Piersol at (828) 862-8792.

"The merchants and churches are to be commended because we couldn't do the sale without them," said Piersol. "This town is so cooperative. It's gotten around town that Judy and I are the Yellow Box Ladies, so people call us if they know about someone who wants to make a large donation of books. For large donations or for those who cannot get to a yellow box, we direct them to call (828) 877-2588 for a pickup."
