Norma Gilliland Darity

Norma Gilliland Darity departed this life peacefully in the comfort of her home Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017.

A native of Henderson County, she was born Sept. 6, 1926, to the late Sylvester and Rachael Gilliland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Darity Sr .; son, Frank Darity Jr .; daughter, Annie L. Coleman; sister, Margaret Sue Young; brothers, Woodrow Gilliland, Robert Gilliland Sr., Edward Gilliland and Sylvester Gilliland Jr.

She attended and graduated from the Brickton School House in West End.

She was a housekeeper, former employee of C.P. Clare Manufacturing and retired from Olin Corporation in Pisgah Forest.

She was a lifelong member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church and also served as a member of the St. John Community Sympathy Club, St. John Hospitality Committee, St. John Usher Board, St. John Senior Choir, and the GAP (God's Anointed People) Ministry.

Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Minnie Belle Owens, of Mills River; daughters, Peggy Ann Darity, of Fletcher, Alice Ware, of Charlotte, Theresa Williams (Donald), of Flat Rock and Diane Parrish, of Fletcher; son, Alfonso Darity of Fletcher; 16 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 34 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at 1 p.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Arden. Rev. David G. Perry officiated.

A visitation was held one hour prior at noon.

Arrangements were under the direction of Hart Funeral Service.
