The Transylvania Times -

You've Got To Have Friends

March 20, 2017

In advance of National Library Week (April 9-15), I thought now might be a good time to promote the local Friends of the Library (FOL). Just like you and me, libraries need friends – people who support the many services of their library and recognize the value it brings to our community.

Friends groups have been around since the beginning of the American library movement. Every day, all across America, Friends are making a difference for the libraries they serve. And the Transylvania County Library’s Friends group is true to that tradition. Through fundraising initiatives and unique programming, the FOL works to ensure that the American library legacy remains viable in our community.

Most of the community recognizes the FOL as the organizers behind the library’s yearly book sale in October. But there are many other free programs and special events that the FOL financially supports, organizes and promotes - ranging from computer animation programs for teens and special educational programs for young readers to our popular Bag Lunch speaker series and our summer concerts. And there are many other activities that FOL spearheads and still more are being considered.

The FOL also runs the “Second Story Book Store” located at the library. It’s a great place to pick up a good book at a great price. The proceeds from the sale of the books help finance FOL programming. It is open Mondays, Thursday and Fridays, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The FOL is eager to add to our membership ranks and pool of enthusiastic volunteers. I encourage folks to stop by the library and sign up to be a Friend. The fee is $15 and includes a monthly newsletter. By contributing as a library Friend, you can make a lasting difference for your library.
