Blue Devils Roll Past Eagles For First Conference Win

March 20, 2017

David Bumgarner fires to first after making a sliding stop behind second base in the Blue Devils' 13-3 win over East Henderson. Bumgarner was 2-4 with an RBI in Friday's game.

Small ball reaped big rewards last Friday as the Brevard Blue Devils took advantage of some key errors and slapped five singles as part of a 10-run third inning to roll past the East Henderson Eagles 13-3.

The win gave Brevard their first WNC Athletic Conference victory of the season and came after the Blue Devils sat idle for seven days due to a cold snap that forced the postponement of games last week.

The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Jesse Lowery scored off an RBI groundout from Cooper Grant.

The Eagles knotted the score in top of the first off an RBI single before moving ahead 3-1 in the third inning off another single and infield error.

Moments later, the fireworks exploded for Brevard.

After reaching on an error and stealing second base, Lowery scored off single from David Bumgarner to cut East's lead in half.

Bumgarner scored on the next at bat as Grant singled up the middle.

Grant proceeded to score off a double from Tanner Ellenberger as Brevard moved in front 4-3.

Another infield error gave the Blue Devils an extra out, and Riley Smith made it count by driving another run across the plate with a sacrifice fly.

But the rally was still on for Brevard, as Matthew Kelley, Tanner Pettit and Tyler Wilson singled in the next three at bats.

Pettit's single drove in two runs and made the score 7-3.

Errors continue to plague the Eagles as two mishaps in the outfield led to four Blue Devil runs.

First baseman Tanner Ellenberger was 2-3 Friday night with a single, a double and an RBI. The senior also scored twice. Brevard hosts the West Henderson Falcons Tuesday at 7 p.m.

When the dust settled, six Blue Devil hits and four East Henderson errors contributed to a 10-run avalanche for Brevard.

Both sides settled down over the next inning, but the Blue Devils put an end to the game early in the bottom of the fifth.

Bumgarner scored to make the score 12-3.

Ellenberger walked moments later and scored on an RBI double from Kyle Williams, which ended the game via the 10-run mercy rule.

Bumgarner, Ellenberger and Williams all finished with a pair of hits and an RBI on the day. Grant and Pettit both went 1-3 with two RBIs.

Smith picked up his second win of the season on the hill, going the distance and giving up six hits and one earned run in five innings of work.

The senior left-hander has a 2.15 ERA through 13 innings this season.

Brevard (4-2) is home again Tuesday as they face West Henderson (5-2) in an early season conference showdown.
