Brevard Rallies In The Fifth To Upend East Henderson

March 20, 2017

Lady Blue Devil Madisyn Cobb slaps an RBI single to the opposite field as part of Brevard's 10-run fifth inning against East Henderson last Friday. Cobb was 1-1, with an RBI and one run scored on the day.

When the Lady Blue Devils' bats get hot there isn't much hope for the opposition.

Brevard's offense caught fire once again last Friday as part of an eight-hit, 10-run, fifth inning that turned the tables on the East Henderson Eagles and propelled the Lady Blue Devils to a 13-9 victory.

The win didn't come easy, however, as Brevard found themselves in a hole after the top of the first as the Eagles took advantage of an error and two singles to build a 3-0 lead.

East struck again in the top of the second off another error to move ahead 4-0.

The Lady Blue Devils got on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI from Kelsey Owenby.

Another double from Savannah Alston scored Lauren DuBreuil and cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth.

But East responded with an RBI single in the top of the fifth to make it 5-2 entering the bottom of the inning.

That's when Brevard flipped the switch.

Hannah Cabe led off with a single before Owenby double.

Both scored when Brooke Nanney drove a gapper into left-center.

DuBreuil delivered with a single moments later that scored Nanney and tied the score.

The Blue Devils moved ahead 6-5 after Alston singled, driving in DuBreuil.

A Taylor Sales groundout gave Brevard two outs, but they kept the rally going.

Madisyn Cobb slapped an RBI single past first base before Cabe lifted an RBI double deep to center field.

Owenby followed with an RBI single before Sydney Gilbert capped off the scoring with a single up the middle that scored two.

And just like that, a three-run deficit became a seven-run lead.

Cabe racked up her third RBI of the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single that scored Sales.

Needing eight runs to extend the game, the Eagles didn't go down without a fight as they managed to drive four runs across the plate, including a two-RBI double.

But Gilbert bore down and got an infield groundout to end the game.

Cabe, Owenby and Nanney all finished with three hits. Cabe led the way with three RBIs, while Owenby, Nanney, Gilbert and Alston had two RBIs a piece.

Brevard's Brooke Nanney (background) was 3-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in the win over East. Nanney leads Brevard in hits, extra-base hits, RBIs and batting average.

Through six games Nanney is batting .632 with a team-leading 12 hits. Cabe is excelling as a freshman, batting .500 and tying Nanney with eight RBIs.

Gilbert, who is also has eight RBIs this season, collected her fifth win of the year.

She gave up 14 hits and struck out five batters while giving up four earned runs.

Friday was the second time this season that Brevard scored 10 runs in three outs – they also posted 10 on Rosman.

The Lady Blue Devils have erupted offensively nearly every game this year, as Brevard has scored four or more runs in one inning in each of their five wins.

After Friday's win, Brevard is 5-1. The Lady Blue Devils host West Henderson (3-2) Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
