The Transylvania Times -

Public Invited To Attend Screening Of Anti-Bullying Film-Brevard NC

March 30, 2017

Davidson River School’s Rebound program and Brevard College’s Teacher Education program have partnered to co-host a community screening of the documentary film, “REJECT: The Science of Belonging.”

The film and panel discussion will take place on April 4 in Dunham Auditorium at Brevard College, starting at 6 p.m. This screening is free to the public, made possible in part by a grant from the Transylvania County Schools Education Foundation.

The goal in bringing “REJECT” to Transylvania County is to increase awareness about the consequences of interpersonal rejection and to promote discussion of solutions the community can develop, and behaviors of acceptance, tolerance, and inclusion of all students.

“REJECT” takes a science-based and solution-oriented look at the roots of bullying behavior and violent behavior against the self or others.

The film aims to raise public consciousness about the serious and potentially lethal consequences of interpersonal rejection in its many forms — peer bullying, parental neglect (or abuse), racial discrimination, and other forms of social rejection across all age groups.

It speaks to parents, teachers, administrators, organizations that train teachers, coaches, mental health professionals, clergy, counselors, juvenile court counselors, office managers — anyone entrusted with influence over others and in a position to foster acceptance, inclusion and social connection. The discussion panel will consist of Alice Wellborn (Brevard College professor, Transylvania County Board of Education), Sheila Moo-ney (school counselor, Davidson River School), Janna Laughridge (school counselor, Brevard Elementary), and Dr. Jeremy Gibbs (chief academic officer, Transyl-vania County Schools).

Note: “REJECT” is a mature conversation that includes the discussion of violence and suicide. For more information about the film, visit http://www.reject film.com.

Organizers include Jessica Webb, of the Davidson River School Rebound Program) and Dr. Betsy Burrows, Director of Teacher Education at Brevard College.
