Dr. Bryan Abernethy has been named as the new principal at Brevard High School for the 2017-18 school year.

"I am pleased to announce Dr. Bryan Abernethy as the new principal at Brevard High School," said Superintendent Dr. Jeff McDaris in a press release. "Dr. Abernethy has demonstrated leadership in uniting students, parents, and the community for continued success in academics and the growth of a school family, and we are excited for him to bring those skills to Brevard."

According to the press release, Abernethy has served public school students from urban and rural environments in North Carolina for 15 years. A fourth-generation educator, he has served as PE teacher, multi-sport coach, and athletic director in middle and high schools, assistant principal in elementary, middle, and high schools, and recently as a high school principal.

In two years as principal of East Columbus High School, Abernethy helped lead his school to dramatic growth in student performance, positive ratings by teachers, and positive relationships with parents, as well as local businesses and churches in the community, the release stated.

His empathy for children of diverse backgrounds and focus on finding common ground among individuals stems from extensive travel to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand through his education at UNC Wilmington.

Abernethy takes pride in being a musician, an athlete, and an educator. His emphasis on these areas and on creating positive relationships in the school community will make an impact at Brevard High School.

"Music, the arts, vocational education, clubs, and other aspects of public education cannot be pushed aside because they ultimately contribute to developing students who are multi-talented, open-minded, and better prepared for the future," Abernethy said.

Abernethy was married to his wife Tenesha in 2015, and they have a 2-year-old son, Luther. Having been born in Johnson City, Tenn. with a lifelong love for the Great Smoky and Appalachian mountains, they are eager to move closer to family and live in the mountains of North Carolina.

Abernethy will take over as Brevard High School principal in late June or early July.
