Brevard Ballet performed "The Ugly Duckling & Napoli" on June 4 at Brevard High School. Seventy-five local youth and community members rounded out the cast, and local college students served as the technical crew along with parent volunteers.

The performance was the first of several the school will present this summer.

Brevard Ballet School's summer session offers classes for ages 3 through adults. Dancers age 4 and up have the opportunity to perform at Brevard's July 4th celebration downtown.

Brevard Ballet will hold the third annual Brevard Ballet - Rise & Shine Summer Dance Program made possible by a grant from Dr. Ann Farash and Hendersonville Pediatrics. Brevard Ballet dancers staff the program and gain teaching and leadership experience while Rise & Shine scholars are exposed to ballet and related topics including in-depth looks at African-American pioneers in ballet. The Rise & Shine scholars will join Brevard Ballet at their performance at the gazebo on July 4 at 3 p.m. as part of Brevard's holiday celebration.

On July 14, The Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club and Brevard Ballet will participate in American Ballet Theatre's 2017 Project Plié Master Class Series. Angie Wells, director of Brevard Ballet and Brevard Ballet School, will guide Boys & Girls Club members through a fun activity-based movement class designed to introduce them to the art form of classical ballet.

Brevard Ballet is seeking donations from the community to fund scholarships for the coming school year for deserving Rise & Shine scholars and children with special needs.

"For the school year that just ended, we were incredibly fortunate to have funding for full scholarships for four Rise & Shine scholars and one special needs child in addition to a free special needs dance class, all made possible by the generosity of The CAN'd Aid Foundation, Dr. Ann Farash & Hendersonville Pediatrics and anonymous community members," said Wells. "While we very much appreciate Dr. Farash, CAN'd Aid and Pisgah Forest Rotary for their support for the coming year, we are in need of additional funding for the 2017-18 term. Brevard Ballet's outreach programs for Rise & Shine and children with special needs have many success stories, and we need our community's help in order to continue making a positive impact on these children who face a variety of challenges."

Brevard Ballet is a non-profit 501(c)(3) civic ballet company that serves young dancers and the community by promoting ballet through performances and educational efforts. Brevard Ballet School is the official school of Brevard Ballet. For more information, please call (828) 200-4671 or visit http://www.BrevardBallet.org.
