Jobless Numbers Jump In May - Brevard, NC

Transylvania County’s jobless rate in May was 4.2 percent, up from 3.9 percent the previous month, according to preliminary figures released from the state Department of Commerce.

The local jobless numbers only take into account those who qualify for unemployment benefits and have not been seasonally adjusted.

The statewide rate in May was 4.3 percent, up from 4.2 percent the previous month.

Transylvania’s jobless rate in May of 2016 was 4.4 percent. Jobless rates increased in 67 of the state’s 100 counties in May, decreased in 13 and remained the same in 20.

Buncombe County’s jobless rate in May was 3.3 percent, the lowest in the state, while Haywood’s was 3.9 percent.

Jackson was at 4.5 percent, and Henderson stood at 3.6 percent. Transylvania had the 35th lowest jobless rate in the state.

At 7.8 percent, Edgecombe and Scotland counties were the highest in the state.

The other two counties remained unchanged.

Among the metro areas, Rocky Mount had the highest at 6.8 percent. Asheville had the lowest at 3.5 percent.

When compared to the same month last year, not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates decreased in 97 counties, increased in one and remained unchanged in two.

The number of workers employed statewide in May increased by 5,145 to 4,709,722, while those unemployed increased by 4,347 to 212,911.

Since May 2016, the number of workers employed statewide increased by 64,923 while those unemployed decreased by 14,348.
