Hundreds Of Runners Mark 22nd Firecracker Run - Brevard, NC

There was plenty of patriotism on display last Tuesday morning at the 22nd annual Firecracker Run in downtown Brevard. More than 400 runners took part in the event, which is one of three races annually sponsored by the Brevard Rotary Club.

The Rotary Club of Brevard's 22nd annual July 4th Firecracker Run attacked the streets of Brevard early Tuesday morning with over 400 folks participating.

Beautiful weather and runners dressed in red, white and blue set the start of the Heart of Brevard festivities at 8 a.m.

The 5K race, which had over 300 runners, was the most popular of the three races.

Over 50 runners finished the 10K and about 10 children experienced their first "Fun" run.

Kaitlin Tanner, 20, from Shreveport, La., was the fastest finisher overall for 5K with a time of 18:58.

Lazaro Vasquez, 15, was second with a time of 19:36 and Urias Velasques, 20, was third with a finish of 19:52.

The top 10K finishers were Dylan Christopher, 16, of Fletcher, with a time of 37:38, followed by Jeff Ford, 29, of Brevard, (39:45) and Joseph Hall, 44 of Ellenboro, N.C. was third.

The fastest female finisher in the 10K was Meg Huffstutter, 34, from Asheville with a time of 45:36.

Paul Hoffman, Rotary's race chairperson was thrilled at the turnout and cooperation of the racers and Rotarians alike.

"We are a volunteer organization that does a lot of good here in Brevard. We sure had a bang up, fun day at this Firecracker Run," he said.

Lazaro Vasquez and Kaitlin Turner, pictured above, set the pace in the 5K race. Vasquez came in second at 19:36 and Turner took first place overall, finishing with a time of 18:58.

The Rotary Club of Brevard hosts three races each year to fund their community outreach programs, The White Squirrel on Memorial Day weekend, The Firecracker Run on July 4th and the Flight of the Vampire near Halloween.

At the popular races, hundreds of runners participate and over 20 states have been represented.

The Rotary Club of Brevard is a group of business-minded professionals and individuals that meets at The Phoenix and the Fox Restaurant on Gaston Street every Tuesday at noon.
