Percussionist Jason DeCristofaro will be the featured soloist at the Brevard Community Band's concert on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 3 p.m. in Brevard College's Porter Center.

The theme for the performance is "The Brevard Community Band Goes Around the World in One Afternoon" and selections will showcase a variety of music from various countries and time periods. DeCristofaro will perform "Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints," a one movement concerto for xylophone by American composer Alan Hovhaness.

DeCristofaro, an educator, performer and composer based in Asheville, is currently an adjunct faculty member at Warren Wilson College's music department where he directs their jazz ensemble and teaches courses in world music and jazz improvisation. He also teaches music theory, jazz history and music appreciation at A -B Tech.

As a published composer, his works have been performed in China, New Zealand, Sweden, and the U.S, and he has been a featured composer with the Symphony of the Mountains, Asheville Ballet, and Asheville Jazz Orchestra.

DeCristofaro won the 2011 Yamaha/Percussive Arts Society Terry Gibbs international competition for jazz vibraphonists and has been a guest clinician and performer at Furman University, Appalachian State University, Western Carolina University and the Brevard Music Center.

Recently, he celebrated five years as the musical director and host of Jazz Night at The Phoenix & The Fox in Brevard. He has a master's in percussion performance from the UNC School of the Arts, a Master of Liberal Arts and Sciences from UNC-Asheville, and is working on his doctorate in music education at Boston University.

A longtime member of the Brevard Community Band, DeCristofaro credits that organization as being an integral part of his musical education, from his high school band days to his current status as a professional musician and music educator.

In addition to the Hovhaness "Fantasy," the band's program will include Zo Elliot's "British Eighth" march, Bach's "Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue," two selections from Shostakovich's score to "The Gadfly," Clare Grundman's "Hebrides Suite," David Dele Cese's "Inglesina," Jamie Texidor's "Amparito Roca," and three selections from Darius Milhaud's "Suite Francaise."

BCB President Linda Threatte said, "Jason DeCristofaro is an outstanding percussionist and an exciting performer. We are proud to have him as a member of the Brevard Community Band and delighted that he will be soloing with us on this concert. The Hovhaness 'Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints' is the perfect piece to showcase his musical talents, so, you will not want to miss this performance."

Tickets for the performance are $10 for adults and may be purchased at the door or from a band member; students 18 and younger are admitted to the concert for free.
