Teresa Cotham Anderson, of Brevard, passed peacefully and graciously on the afternoon of Aug. 3, 2017. She was surrounded by the love and adoration of her family.

She was born Aug. 24, 1949, to Perry and Lavelle Cotham in Dyersburg, Tenn. In 1959 her family bought a farm and moved to Henry, Tenn. where, at the age of 9, she would meet her soul mate, high school sweetheart and eventual husband, Tommy Anderson.

She attended University of Tennessee at Martin with a degree in social sciences and later attained her national board certification in education.

She and Tommy married on June 8, 1974, in a small ceremony in the front yard of that family farm and moved to Brevard the very same day. With a U-Haul truck and a Volkswagen Beetle in tow, they pulled into a property on See-Off Mountain later that night, setting forth on their new adventure and a life together that would last 43 years in Transylvania County.

She landed a teaching position the very next Monday at Pisgah Forest School and taught for 28 years at both Brevard Middle and Brevard High schools. She had the privilege of mentoring and instructing countless students, along the way building many close relationships with those who adored her personality - a no nonsense attitude that was intricately woven into a quintessential farm girl charm.

Indeed, she made everyone feel they were important, but none felt that love and support more so than her two sons. Ryan and Corey were both truly the lights of her life but willingly relinquished that high honor as she evolved from Mom to Gran. Her grandchildren, Clara and Sophia, were fortunate to experience the overwhelming love and life lessons that only she was capable of delivering (along with a little gardening advice). But so many were privy to those life lessons as well.

As the longest surviving patient at Cancer Care of Brevard, she was a beacon of hope for those who sat beside her during treatments, and who solicited her support during their own journeys with cancer, or those who simply stood from afar to take notes on her strength and resilience.

Not only does she leave her family, but an entire group of friends who have remained extremely close for 43 years. Collectively, they all served as her own beacon of hope throughout her adult life.

She leaves her beloved husband, Tommy; her son, Ryan, his wife, Jennifer and their two children, Clara and Sophia, of Brevard; and youngest son, Corey and his wife, Betsy, of Asheville.

She also leaves her mother, Lavelle Cotham, of Brevard; brother, Steve Cotham and his wife, Sharon, of Murray, Ky .; and nieces, Wendy Cotham-Dula, of Spartanburg and Molly Kate Cotham, of Sanford, N.C.

A memorial service will be held at the Brevard High School Auditorium Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donate in honor of Teresa to The Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club of Transylvania County or The Bread of Life.
