C.A.R.E. Coalition: C.A.R.E. Seeks Community Opinions On Marijuana

September 4, 2017

When people think about marijuana, their own personal preferences, or indifference, often shape their opinions. That’s natural.

As the controversy between federal regulations, medicalization and state legalization continues to shake out, the issue over marijuana use touches on hot-button issues including public health and safety, states’ rights, civil liberties, education and social justice, to name a few.

The C.A.R.E. Coalition is committed to promoting healthy, drug-free youth who have opportunities to become their best selves. Because of this pledge, it is important to consider how marijuana and the trend towards legalization in America might impact our community and its young people.

To better understand Transylvania residents’ values, opinions and attitudes surrounding marijuana and find areas of agreement regarding the use of marijuana, the C.A.R.E. Coalition is hosting a community conversation about marijuana.

The Marijuana Comm-unity Forum will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. at the Board of Elections meeting room at 150 S. Gaston St. in downtown Brevard. Brevard Mayor Jimmy Harris will serve as moderator. All community members are invited to attend.

This town hall-style meeting will allow citizens to express their thoughts and opinions about the use of marijuana. This event is not a debate, but an opportunity for people to voice, acknowledge and listen to differing points of view regarding a complex issue that affects the entire community.

If you are interested in participating, but not sure how to contribute, consider these questions: How has marijuana impacted you, your family or your lifestyle? What concerns do you have about marijuana use in Transylvania County? Where do you stand on medicalization or legalization and why?

Those who wish to speak at the forum are encouraged to sign up for a three-minute time slot. Speaker registration begins at 5:30 p.m. Speakers must be Transylvania County residents with identification. Visit the coalition website at for guidelines.

The C.A.R.E. Coalition is working towards a healthy, vibrant Transyl-vania County free of underage drinking and substance abuse. All are welcome to attend the next coalition meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Community Services Building Conference room at 106 E. Morgan St. For more information, call (828) 884-1750, visit or follow Care Coalition-Transylvania on Facebook.
