Volunteers Prepare For Library's Annual Book Sale - Brevard, NC

September 7, 2017

Putting on a big book sale every year like the one held by the Transylvania County Library may appear to be a pretty easy, routine affair. For the patrons, you simply walk in the door, browse through thousands of books meticulously organized and go home with some great finds that also happen to be great bargains.

But for the hard working volunteers who organize this event, it is anything but routine and hardly an easy endeavor. Months of planning, a detailed organizational game plan and an army of dedicated volunteers are the critical ingredients necessary to conduct a successful book sale.

This year the library’s book sale begins on Saturday, Oct. 7, and ends on Saturday, Oct. 14. But right now is when the important first phase is set in motion.

“Our most important task now,” said Alice Wellborn, “is lining up much needed volunteer support. We could not hold a sale as large as this if it were not for them.”

Wellborn, a member of the Friends of the Library (FOL) Board, has also been the chief organizer of the book sale for the past four years.

“This has been the FOL’s main fundraiser every year and its success assures that our organization can continue to provide the kind of free programs and events that are available to the county throughout the year.”

Here are just a few facts and figures that highlight the effort that goes into the book sale:

•On average, roughly 250 boxes, representing more than 5,000 books are donated, collected and categorized for the sale.

•More than 140 volunteers work in various ways during the sale.

•Over 1,600 hours are clocked in by volunteers before, during and after the sale.

•The FOL and other volunteers devote over 10 weeks in the planning process before the sale.

•Thousands of books are sold each year. Over the years between $15,000 and $16,000 have been raised through the book sale.

•There is no specific head count for the number of patrons, but Wellborn notes that it would certainly be in the “hundreds.”

Wellborn suggests that individuals who are interested in helping at the sale visit the main desk at the library now to sign up.

“Volunteering offers folks an opportunity to be part of this big community event,” she added. “And you’ll walk away from your time spent at the library book sale knowing you helped the Friends to continue their good work.”

The mission of the FOL is to enhance Transylvania County Library services by underwriting free programs and events at the library – such as the popular concert series and the ongoing Bag Lunch Arts program, along with many other family oriented programs throughout the year.
