Joan Ellen Williams, 84, of Brevard, passed away Sept. 17, 2017, at Tore's Home, in East Flat Rock.

She will be remembered as "the peace lady," a Quaker, teacher and avid gardener.

In retirement, she enriched her life through volunteering, most recently with The Children's Center and The Bread of Life in Brevard. She embodied the lifestyle of a friend, always emphasizing peace, diversity and the importance of a small footprint on this earth.

Born in Newark, N.J., Jan. 19, 1933, she was the second daughter of the late F.C. "Andy" and Ellen Anderson. She grew up in West Orange, N.J., and graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., with a degree in education. She was a skilled and compassionate teacher who remained close to many of her former students for decades.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Richard Williams; her great-granddaughter, Clara Keller; and many others who have welcomed her to the other side.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Hal Brackett; son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Andrea Williams; step-daughter, Karin Williams; step-son, Kevin Williams and his wife Lisa; granddaughter, Tess Williams; grandson, Nolan Williams; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty Lee and Harry Cordle and Susan and Dick Bir; and numerous nieces and nephews, along with many special friends, including Joyce Sasso and Shirley Hammon.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Bread of Life, 238 S. Caldwell St., Brevard, N.C. 28712, or to The Children's Center, 95 S. Johnson St., Brevard, NC 28712.

A memorial to remember Joan will be held in the spring of 2018.

The family is very grateful for the loving care given by the dedicated staff at both Tore's Home in East Flat Rock and Four Seasons Hospice in Flat Rock.
