Someone once said, “Books are the only things you can buy that truly make you richer.” And the opportunity to stock up on books for the whole family is coming soon. The 28th Annual Friends of the Library (FOL) Book sale will be held Oct. 7-14 at the Transylvania County Library’s Rogow Room.

Oct. 7, 10, 11 and 13th the sale runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Monday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 12, the sale runs from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. A wide variety of more than 5,000 wonderful books, CDs and DVDs will for sale.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, and Thursday, Oct. 12, everything at the sale will be half price. On Friday, a box of books may be purchased for $5 and on Saturday, the Oct. 14, a box of books will be on sale for $1. The sale on Saturday runs from 9:30 a.m. until noon.

Books (hard cover and paperbacks) in the sale include popular fiction and mysteries, children’s books, science fiction, westerns, history, literature, biographies, arts and crafts, cookbooks, philosophy and religion. Other topics include science, health, travel, sports and games, gardening, business, how-to, reference, nature, pets and foreign language. Coffee table books, large print books and regional favorites are also available, as well antique books.

The book sale provides an opportunity to purchase and enjoy books at a greatly reduced price and to support an important community resource. Over the years, the sale has raised between $15,000 and $16,000 — money that underwrites the many activities and events provided by the FOL.

“The FOL and their many volunteers put a lot of time and energy into this sale,” said Anna Yount, director of the Transylvania Public Library. “It means a lot to the library and, I believe, to the community at large to have an organization like this that does so much to support the library, while also offering terrific free programs for county residents throughout the year.”

On Friday, Oct. 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. there will be a Friends only sale. There will be a membership table set up to enroll new members. Enrollment in the FOL organization costs $15 and includes a monthly newsletter, the Library Herald.

The Second Story Book Store, which is located at the library and run by the FOL volunteers, will be closed in the weeks leading up to the sale. The book store is temporarily closed. The store will reopen on Monday, Oct. 30.
