Talk Planned On Putting Your Garden To Bed, So That It Wakes Up In The Spring

October 2, 2017

There are lots of articles and books that focus on what to plant, how and when to plant, but there is less literature out there on how to prepare your garden in the fall so that your plants and shrubs return healthy in the spring. People put a lot of time, effort and money into various plantings and it is a shame if they do not flourish well in the coming year for want of a few helpful hints that will help people be a successful gardener year after year.

John Murphy will be giving a talk entitled “Putting your garden to bed” on Oct. 10. His talk speaks to fall gardening tasks, covering the things to do in the ornamental and vegetable garden to extend the season, protect plants, improve aesthetics and help get the garden off to a good start for the next spring.

Murphy is the director of Bullington Gardens in Hendersonville, where he manages the property, oversees staff and volunteers and leads educational programs for adults and children. Early in his career, Murphy spent time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone, helping people through agricultural projects. This experience led him to the area of horticultural therapy (HT). He later pursued his training in HT from the Horticultural Therapy Institute.

In addition Murphy is a Warren Wilson College alumnus and a former dairy farmer. He lived off the grid for four years in Western New Guinea and has had a long-time interest in plants and botany.

The talk is sponsored by the Transylvania County Extension Master Garden-ers and will be on Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. and will be held in the Conference Room at the Community Services Build-ing, located at 106 E. Morgan St. in Brevard. The public is welcome and there is no charge. Refresh-ments will be served starting at 9.30 a.m. This gives participants an opportunity to meet with other Master Gardeners.
