Leaf Report

Fall colors are coming along nicely at roughly 2,500 feet and below along the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to Howard Neufeld, an Appalachian State biology professor, who is also known as the "Fall Color Guy."

However, in other areas, he said, the colors are very dull. And above 3,000 feet many of the leaves have fallen off.

After this upcoming weekend, Neufeld said, the best colors will be at the lower levels, including Brevard, Pisgah Forest and Gorges State Park.

Neufeld blames the combination of the unusually warm October weather plus Hurricanes Irma and Nate for having a negative impact on the trees.

On a scale of one is worst and 10 is best, Neufeld ranked this fall color season as a three.

Appalachian State University's Biology Department has produced a fall color map that may be seen at http://www.biology.appstate.edu.
