Good Shepherd Musicians To Present Bach Cantata 80 - Brevard, NC

October 26, 2017

As part of the festivities celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd choir and invited musical guests will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata 80, “A Mighty Fortress is our God,” during the 10:30 a.m. service on Oct. 29.

October 2017 marks 500 years since Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the church door in Wittenberg, an event that would later come to signify the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

“I have wanted to perform this piece for a long time, but haven’t had the right opportunity with the right ensemble until now. Performing a work Bach wrote to honor the Refor-mation on its 500th anniversary is a really special opportunity for us at LCGS. I appreciate the enthusiasm and resources offered by the church community to make this possible,” said music minister David Gresham.

Bach wrote Cantata 80 specifically to commemorate Reformation Day, a public holiday in Leipzig where he was living when this musical masterpiece was first performed. To honor such an important holiday, Bach seems to have unleashed his full creative powers, and the resulting composition is widely considered the finest writing he did in this medium.

A unique feature of Cantata 80 is the orchestration, scored for organ, strings and oboes. Treating these forces as independent musical lines, rather than as a simple accompaniment to the vocal writing, Bach created a piece that was both singularly dramatic and especially challenging for the choir and soloists. Consequently, it is not often performed outside of large churches.

The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd is located at 22 Fisher Road in Brevard across from Ingles.

The cantata includes about 23 minutes of music and will be part of Sunday worship on Oct. 29 at 10:30 a.m. A German-themed luncheon will follow the service. Both the service and the luncheon are free and open to the public.
