Brevard High School students have earned seats in prestigious honor choirs for 2017-18. Pictured here: Sofia Pandolfo, Candace Britt, Doug Grimm, Emily Sheffield, and Sabra Freeman.

For the third consecutive year, Brevard High School is sending student musicians to North Carolina's top high school choir, the N.C. Music Educators Association Honors Chorus.

Three students from the BHS Choir competed on Sept. 30, in Hickory, N.C., to earn a spot in the NCMEA Honors Chorus. Senior Douglas Grimm and juniors Candace Britt and Sabra Freeman prepared a predetermined portion of a choral piece to sing in front of an adjudicator.

They also performed an 8-measure sight-singing example that had to be reproduced after only 60 seconds of study.

Chorus teacher Bart Gilleland offered praise for his students who sought this opportunity for further training in musicianship and performance.

"We are proud to announce that Doug Grimm and Sabra Freeman earned seats in the NCMEA Honors Chorus and will be singing with the group this weekend in Winston-Salem," said Gilleland. "This is the first year for Sabra, and second consecutive year for Doug. Earning these seats is a milestone for every participant in his or her young musical career. Brevard High School is fortunate to have been able to send these three students to compete for such an event."

The NCMEA Honors Chorus is the premier 176-voice vocal ensemble chosen from students across North Carolina. The ensemble performs annually at the NCMEA Professional Development convention in Winston-Salem during the second weekend in November.

The BHS Choir also announced that five student musicians were selected to the Mars Hill 2018 Festival Choir. Mars Hill is the region's oldest choral festival, celebrating its 70th anniversary.

This year's participants from Brevard High School are: seniors Doug Grimm (third year) and Emily Sheffield (fourth year), juniors Candace Britt and Sabra Freeman (first year for each), and sophomore Sofia Pandolfo (first year).

Gilleland said, "We congratulate these students on their hard work. The 2018 Mars Hill Choral Festival will take place the first Saturday in February on the campus of Mars Hill University. Being selected to this choir is an immense privilege and is equal in stature and tradition to the NCMEA Honor Choir."
