Mildred Doe Szabo

Mildred Doe Szabo, granddaughter of Dr. Christopher Grimshawe, passed away June 10, 2017, in Jacksonville, Fla. at the age of 98.

She was born in her grandfather’s home in the Montvale/Whitewater/ Boyhaynee area of Transylvania County near Sapphire. She grew up and attended school in Asheville and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in library science. She did graduate study at Columbia University in New York City, where she met her husband, Lory Szabo, who had recently graduated from Cornell University.

They raised four children in Jacksonville and when retirement came in 1985, they built a house on the family property in Montvale/Whitewater, where she was born. She helped form the Montvale Whitewater Cemetery Association and was the first secretary.

She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brevard.

One of her favorite activities was to go lap swimming and lunch afterwards with a group of friends in the Brevard area three times a week.

In 2008, she moved to Jacksonville to be closer to her daughter and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Lorain Szabo, in 1999 and her son, Peter F. Szabo, in 2006.

Survivors include two sons, Nicholas G. Szabo (Pat), of Kodiak, Alaska and C. Robin Szabo (Pam), of Atlanta, Ga .; daughter, Bernadette S. Picras (Tom), of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Jason, Anastasia (Jeff) and Christa; three great-grandchildren, Ryker, Pierce and Ellura; along with many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, at the Montvale Whitewater Cemetery, adjacent to the Whitewater Baptist Church. The church is located off Highway 281 S., approximately five miles from the intersection of Highway 64 in Sapphire.

A reception and repast in the Whitewater Baptist Church Fellowship Hall will follow the service.
