Emmett Casciato, the curator for the WNC Military History Museum, gave the keynote address Friday during the Veterans Day Ceremony at the courthouse gazebo. Casciato talked about all the conflicts Americans have been involved in from the Revolutionary War, through World War I and II, Korean, Vietnam, the Gulf War and the War on Terrorism, and how Americans will "never ever forget" the sacrifices that have been made.

Some 65 Marines and former Marines celebrated the 242nd anniversary of the USMC on Friday at the Brevard American Legion Hall.

The event was based on birthday celebrations held worldwide annually wherever Marines are stationed. The local gathering was chaired by retired Lt. Col. Lee McMinn of Brevard.

"We're not trying to compete with the birthday balls held at embassies and hotel venues," he said, "but we want to lend a certain dignity to the procedings, so we're doing it by the book."

The ceremony ended with a rendition of the Marines Hymn "From the Halls of Montezuma," and the rest of the evening was given to socializing and telling of the usual tall tales.

Members of the JROTC Thursday also took part in a special Veterans Day event, which included recognizing the Marines' birthday, at Rosman High School. Local veterans were also invited to the event.
