Brevard Academy students relax during a recent field trip to DuPont State Recreational Forest.

Calm. Safe. Serene. Peaceful. These are some of the words that Brevard Academy middle school students used to describe how they feel when they are in nature.

On Oct. 19, eighth grade students spent their early-release day strengthening their connection to nature in DuPont State Recreational Forest with Mountain Roots, Inc.

Mountain Roots is an educational nonprofit that runs Brevard Academy's Outdoor Education program, helping K-8 students form connections with their classmates and the natural environment every week. During the first quarter, students learned outdoor living skills; highlights have included setting up tents and building campfires. Although Outdoor Education students regularly enjoy the outdoors in Brevard Academy's woods, creek, and fields, last Thursday was their first off-campus field trip.

Students hiked to the top of Cedar Rock Mountain and reflected on their personal connection to the natural world.

Mountain Roots instructor Kiersten Wilber said, "I was impressed with the students' ability to reflect on their relationship with the natural world. The connections the students make with nature now will help them become environmental stewards in the future."
