The Transylvania Youth Soccer Association (TYSA) finished up their fall season the last Saturday in November, but soccer for 27 young players in the county didn't stop with their last game.

TYSA sent two teams to the Autumn Blast soccer tournament in Hickory Nov. 11-12.

This is the first time in TYSA's history that it has sent a team to a tournament outside of the county to compete and it speaks to the growing local popularity of the sport of soccer.

Richard Coadwell, the coach of the U10 team, Pisgah United Football Club said, "This really speaks to the amount of young talent currently playing for TYSA. Many players who live in Transylvania County and excel in soccer will start playing in Hendersonville and Asheville. By creating these two tournament teams, we have been able to provide competitive soccer without the drive."

Team Manager Heather Layton of Pisgah United, commented, "It was so great to be playing our last game on Sunday and to look over and see the Fighting White Squirrels, the U12 team, playing on the field directly across from us in the championship game of their division! It was fun to cheer on all our young Transylvanian soccer players and represent the Western part of the state."

Gordon Murray, coach of the Fighting White Squirrels who has been involved with soccer in Transylvania County for many years, said, "I am amazed by the natural talent on our team. We only had two months to prepare and we went to Hickory and won our division."

Murray will be coaching the Betbomur Soccer Academy this winter for players interested in increasing their skills.
