Brevard College students will perform in the Porter Center this Saturday.

In 1880, E. W. Benson, then Bishop of Truro and later the Archbishop of Canterbury, constructed the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols for use during the Christmas Eve service in his small congregation in Cornwall, England. In 1918, his festival was adapted for use in the chapel of King's College in Cambridge, where it is performed annually to this day.

On Saturday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m., Brevard College will perform its twenty-first presentation of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at the Porter Center in the Scott Concert Hall, with special lighting by the theatre students.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a service of worship that is traditionally followed during the holiday season. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings from the Old and New Testaments, punctuated by the singing of Christmas carols, hymns and choir music.

Members of the community are warmly invited to join members of the college and their guests at this free event.
