Gail (Cookie) McKnight James Kellett

Gail (Cookie) McKnight James Kellett, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 4, 2017 at home in Brevard.

An avid adventurer, talented artist and wily prankster, she was born in Kingstree, S.C. Sept. 28, 1944. She graduated in 1965 with an RN degree from Mooresville Nursing School.

She met her husband of 52 years, James (Jim) W. Kellett, in 1961 at the Pavilion on Pawleys Island. They started their lives in Charleston, S.C. and after a brief move to Ft. Worth, settled in Mt. Pleasant on the marsh. A little more than a year ago they moved to the quieter life in the mountains of Brevard.

She enjoyed traveling and the stories that these travels created. A natural athlete, she enjoyed horseback riding, skiing, Hiking and swimming. She particularly enjoyed the family softball games at Kellett Beach week and more recently obtained the title of "Corn Hole Champion." She loved art and focused this passion on paintings and bowl turning. She had been nicknamed "Bowlina" for her singular obsession with unusual burl and other trees that she would turn into decorative and useful pieces.

She was well known for her many pranks such as "Peggy Sue" and various phone scams. Also known as Mesa, she adored her five grandsons. She loved to play spoons, swim in the lake, hike, ride trains, get in the hot tub, tell stories and off-color jokes with her grandsons.

She and Jim were active members at St. Andrews Church for 37 years and were involved with Faith Memorial Chapel in Brevard.

She worked many years as a nurse in various settings and volunteered with Hospice, Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity.

She was a devoted wife, a cracker-jack mother, a mischievous and doting grandmother and a generous and intrepid friend. She was a woman you wanted to be around and she will be missed.

She is survived by her husband, James W. Kellett; her daughter, Player Kellett Owen (Patricia L. Owen) and sons, Graham and Kellett; her son, James Wimberly Kellett Jr. (Merritt Smith Kellett) and sons, Hoke, McGregor and Seabrook; her brother, Doug James and wife, Lorena; and her younger brother, Jerry James.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Church, 440 Whilden St., in Mt Pleasant, S.C., Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, at 2 p.m.
